This Under Gravel Filter acts both as a biological, and a chemical filter. The area underneath the gravel acts a breeding ground for beneficial bacteria, while the airlines force the water coming up from the lower portion of the filter through activated carbon. As the air bubbles reach the surface, they break the surface tension of the water and causes current at the waters surface, which greatly increases aeration.
