Native to Africa, the Savannah Monitor is one of the most popular pet Monitors. These monitors accept food easily in captivity, almost too easily. It is important not to overfeed this species or they will over eat and become fat. The Savannah Monitor can be somewhat aggressive, so care needs to be taken when attempting to handle them. The more frequently you interact with your Savannah Monitor the more likely it is to become more docile. Male Savannah Monitors display more aggressive behaviors than females. Males and females tend to be difficult to distinguish based on physical characteristics. The Savannah Monitor is most active during the day, though they will burrow when daytime temperatures get too hot. There is some debate revolving around the diet of the Savannah Monitor in its natural environment. Some studies indicate that a large portion of their diet is made up of birds, small mammals, and small reptiles such as snakes, toads, and lizards, as well as their eggs, while others indicate that they rarely, if ever, consume vertebrates. Insects seem to be a favorite food for most Savannah Monitors. The Savannah Monitor is a beautiful monitor. Their heads are wide and covered with small scales, and they have short necks and snake-like blue tongues. Their bodies are stocky and thick with short tapered tails. They are generally brown to gray in color, with pretty yellow to orange spots that run in rows along their backs. Their tails have yellow to orange rings that alternate with brown along the length of the tail. The average Savannah Monitor measures anywhere from one and a half to four feet in length, though there are five distinct subspecies, which all vary a bit in appearance and size.
Savannah monitors inhabit fairly hot and arid climates. During the day the enclosure should be about 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and they should have access to a basking area that is about 95 degrees. At night the enclosure should be about 10 degrees cooler. As with most Monitors, the breeding season, which is usually during the wet season, is a time of aggression. A female is pursued by a male relentlessly, being bitten until she allows him to mate with her. An average clutch of 35 eggs is laid and will hatch about 22 weeks later.
