Description Fully Cured and ready to add directly to your system.  Millions of beneficial bacteria, enzymes and zooplankton already inhabit the rock creating a natural biological filter.  Typically full of Caves and very porous.  Very nice rock to build reef structures, caves, cantilevers, and such.  This is a favorite and popular rock especially when it comes to building a foundation for Marine and Reef tanks.  The reason it's so affordable is not in any way due to quality or appearance but that Hawaii is so close to us here in Southern California compared to half way around the world in Fiji or other parts of Micronesia, we spend less on shipping. For a good quality rock, there is little to compare to this for the money!

Along with there being so many different grades of rock, it's also worth noting that they come from many different areas and oceans as well. Some people like to have rock from a single location while others like to mix and match pieces from different locations to build intricate formations and increase the biodiversity within the tank. Rock from all the different collection points have different properties and amounts required.

Detailed Description:
The very BEST in base rock anywhere! Primarily lava based stone rock as typically found all around Hawaii in various shades of tan and brown. Heavy loads of microscopic animal life, bacteria and enzyme which will benefit and promote a more natural filtration and natural eco-system. This is by far the best base rock sold anywhere with incredible shapes perfect for building caves, arches, and shelf pieces far more spectacular than Fiji or any other on the market. It's heavier and shaped better than Fiji which makes it perfect for larger fish, larger snails like Mexican turbos, and even larger eels like morays that normally would knock over Fiji rock. This is a very secure stable rock that holds it's planted shape well. All rock will vary in but not limited to size, shape, color, quality, hitch hikers, density, etc. The rock is medium in density weight compared to other rocks and is typically loaded with holes, crevices and unique shapes great for marine or reef tank use. Coralline algae will grow very quickly following the instructions in our live rock care package, so if structure and shape is more important than initially coloring in order to build awesome structures in your tank, this is the rock that you want!

Base rock is generally rock that was once live but for some reason or other was allowed to completely die off, generally because it has been dried out for an extended period of time. It is generally used as a less expensive foundation for larger tanks and is a great way to save on costs. Although it doesn't have any immediate benefits for the tank, over time with the addition of some premium grade live rock, it too will become live, teaming with various life forms.

Cured live rock is rock that has been sitting in a tank, either in someone's home or at the LFS for long enough periods of time that all the organic matter that was on it from the ocean to die off. This can be used to set up a nearly fully cycled tank and can safely be added to an established tank. Since it takes time and space to cure the rock, it generally costs more then uncured live rock.

Aquacultured live rock is one of the newer types of rock available on the market that was introduced as an alternative to taking wild harvested rock from the delicate reef systems around the world. It generally consists of Tuffa rock or aragonite rocks that have been mined on land and dumped into the ocean for a couple years to give it time for life forms, primarily bacteria, to colonize it so we can use it in our tanks. The main disadvantage to aquacultured live rock is that it generally more dense, thus heavier, then live rock that was taken from a coral reef. This means that there isn't as much surface area for the bacteria to colonize so you'll need more rock to do the same job as the more porous rocks. The second disadvantage to aquacultured live rock is that the rock doesn't contain the same biodiversity as wild harvested rock does.

Living Reef Imports LLC. is a world renowned importer and distributor of live rock and transships more varieties of live rock than any other distributor. This rock does not pass through several hands before it gets to our customers. We have it collected and imported directly into the United States where it is then distributed by us throughout the world. This rock is brand new but we only expect to bring in maybe a pallet worth once every couple months as it is hard to obtain. Our rock will smell and look like you collected it right out of the ocean yourself. No more concern of rotten, smelly high ammonia rock to worry about.

We also use a system of cleaning, transporting and segregating our rock making it pre-cured and free of unwanted pests like Mantis shrimps and Aiptasia. Again, because of the care and quality we bring in, we highly recommend shipping via Air Cargo or 2nd Day or faster! Customer Satisfaction Guaranteed!

 Recommended Shipping:
We only recommend shipping via Air Cargo or 2nd Day Air or faster to deliver such fine quality rock in the best possible condition. Being base rock, UPS Ground is fine if better shipping conditions are not within your budget.
