Filter boxes are typically used to bring water from the main aquarium to the wet-dry filter or the sump. They consist of a "skimmer" box inside the tank (that has small slits to help prevent smaller fish from "overflowing" out of the tank and into the sump) and a larger box with hose attachments outside the tank. Water that rises above the level of the "skimmer" will "Filter" into the sump below, thus keeping the water level in the tank constant.

The surface of the water is constantly skimmed, removing undesirable film and enhancing gas exchange. Additionally, the water is aerated as the water falls over the overflow, down the drain and splashes into the sump.
