PUBLIC NOTICE:  As of July 20, 2004, The number of victims of the West Nile Disease transmitted by Mosquito’s are increasing rapidly in Southern California!  Last Thursday in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reported three new West Nile cases confirmed locally alone.  In synopsis, the disease is carried by mosquitoes in ponds, stagnate water sources, fountains, birdbaths, abandoned swimming pools, backyard drainage systems, plant trays, old tires, children’s play areas that gather water, and other standing water ways.  Most sufferers don’t realize they have it at first because it first appears to be flu like symptoms.  Other than the flu like symptoms, a rash may appear, Moderate to Severe Headaches and Body Pains, Swollen Glands, etc. 

Health officials said in excess of 28 people in Southern California had been confirmed infected with the virus so far this year, most of them in San Bernardino County. Others were in Riverside and Los Angeles counties.

The tests done on the dead bird confirmed on July 16 that the virus is moving north, although Kern County has not seen any cases of infected people, state health officials said.

Sixteen horses and 90 birds in California have also been identified as infected with the virus since the beginning of the year.

The virus moves from animals to humans through the bite of a mosquito that fed on an infected bird.

Horses and cows are also susceptible to the virus, but a vaccine exists to protect horses.

Most people who catch the virus will not experience any symptoms, Kern County Health Officer B.A. Jinadu said in a statement. About 10 percent to 15 percent of those infected suffer a mild or moderate illness defined by a fever, headaches and body aches. Less than 1 percent of infected individuals develop more serious neurological diseases like encephalitis and meningitis, according to Jinadu.

Last year, about 10,000 people were infected nationwide and 260 died from complications related to the disease.

Since eliminating mosquitoes is the best prevention for the virus, health officials recommend emptying out sources of standing water and keeping window screens in good repair.

Wearing insect repellant with DEET, pants and long-sleeved shirts are recommended to help prevent infections outdoors.
