Sometimes it's months before you see anything.  Larger worms and pods are sifted so we don't transfer accidently any unwanted fireworms or bristleworms so the sand ships very clean.  Only microscopic animals survive the transit.  After about 3-4 months of being exposed too a reef system not over populated with fish, will you begin too see small worm paths, tunles, and pods crawling around your tank.  You may never see this based on the type and quantity of fish, inverts or other you may have as many are sand sifters which are constantly straining out the sand for these little guys which make a great natural and replinishing food supply.  One final note is that if you ever use a medication in your tank for parasites or other, very often you can and will kill off your population of pods, zoos and worms.  If this occurs, as little as a pound of live sand will replinish the growth cycle again of these delicate creatures.
