QUESTION:

Right now I need to know if doing a "what you see is what you get"  cherry picked live rock will allow me to charge a premium over ebay and on my future site.  I also need to know if I can charge a super high premium on local delivery.  I'm predicting these two factors will allow me to charge a premium; but I could be dead wrong.  This is the only advantage I have right now to go against the big sellers.  This is also the best advtange I could find and, why I think I can buy at your ebay price and then resell. If this works then I will open up to many more things.  For now live rock will be the perfect product for this.

ANSWER:

I did the "what you see is what you get" a long time ago but for pushing 5 tons a week, it was rediculous for me.  You can get a premium because people will find comfort in knowing exactly what they are getting.  If you are up for the job of photo and sale, that's great.  The other delima I had was if you did this, you typically wanted to run it as an auction for maximum turn around.  You need to have holding tanks with great lighting in place to hold their colors and life for the week long auction.  Alternatively, you could post an auction for a 3 day starting Fri and ending Sunday which are the busiest sale days of the week with out lagging too far out there.

Yes, many of our distributors charge (based on location, local economy, difficulty for the pet shop to get to their local wholesalers location), and distance for you to drive a nice surcharge for delivery as an added optional service.  What I typically see is if the dealer buys $1,000 or more, the delivery is free.  If under a $1,000 there's a $25 ro $50 delivery charge.

Do your research and see what it costs your local retailers to have to take maybe several hours of their valuable time out of their day or their employees day, and the cost to drive too and from their nearest wholesaler (we can help locate the wholesaler nearest your local petshops) and you will know what you can charge that is fair, profitible to you and a beneficial and economically wise thing to have you do for your local pet center.

We sell a service for SIC coding of any target market you could want, with query options such as pet shops that only specifically sell fish and supply (not dog and cat houses), pet centers that make a minimum sales per annual, etc.  However, if you are a Authorized Distributor, this service is FREE!
