LIVE ROCK CARE PACKAGE

THERE ARE CERTAIN CLEANING REQUIRMENTS AND CARE TECHNIQUES
TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR LIVE ROCK.  THE FOLLOWING WILL SHOW YOU WHAT TO DO AS SOON AS YOU GET YOUR ROCK AND THEN WHAT TO DO AS FOLLOW-UP TO MAKE IT SUPER BRIGHT PURPLE IN CORALINE ALGAE SO BE SURE TO READ IT ALL.

UPON RECEIPT OF YOUR ROCK

  1. Immediately after recieving your Live Rock, shake the live rock up and down in a large bucket of saltwater to shake off any dead zooplankton or other dead animal or plant material.
  2. Scrape with your finger any dead or dieing animal, plant, sponge or other to remove it from the rock.
  3. Visually inspect every single crevice and hole in each rock.  Use a coat hanger if necessary to seek any dead animals.  Some times starfish, crabs, clams or other animals crawl up into these holes and even though there is nothing wrong with the rock, there may be a dead animal inside the rock that could cause a considerable ammonia or nitrite toxin spike.
  4. Smell every piece of rock individually.  They should be slightly damp and smell like the ocean.  Not putrid or foul smelling.  If the entire box is foul, call us within 24hours to see if you are covered by a warranty.  If you shipped 2nd Day or Quicker, we will cover replacing your product.  However, you the customer is ultimatily in charge and if you choose to ship anything slower than 2nd Day would be the customers responsibility and won't be in most cases covered by the shippers insurance which only covers their liability for damage, loss or theft.
  5. Another good rinsing should be done and then once convinced that there is as much die off washed off as possible, it should be put in an isolation tank.  This is just good husbandry.  Take insurance and isolate any new live stock, not just with live rock, but also tropical fish, corals, etc. for a period of at least two weeks.  After two weeks you find no toxin levels such as ammonia or nitrite and everything appears to be visually good such as no continued die off or disease, then you are now ready to begin placing the rock (or other livestock) in your main tank.
  6. Remember that depending upon a myriad of variables, your choice of shipping, any stow away animals in the rock, clams in the rock, etc.... Even the freshest pre-cured live rock could take any where from 0 days - 4 months to cure.  Everyone is a different circumstance.  Some may recieve rock ready to into the tank immediately and others take much longer.  However, if there was something wrong with the rock, it will be very bad smelling immediately upon delivery and if you notify us within 24 hours of delivery, we can help you.  We can't help you with delayed complaints because we aren't warrantied on our rock and two, there's no way for us to confirm the customer didn't allow it to sit too long before placing into the tank nor can we confirm conditions of a tank.  All Rock contains very good Beneficial bacterium which thrive on ammonia, nitrite and nitrate which is the big reason to have live rock in your tank.  Any high ammonia or toxin spikes no matter how long it takes to cure may harm or kill off any fish or coral which the rock is supposed to be cured in a sepperate isolation tank first anyway, but will actually grow very fast bacterium in high quantitiy making it even better rock!  You may loose color or other durring this process but if you are providing proper lighting and additives like kalkwasser calcium, strotinum and magnesium, all coral line algae and purple and other will grow back fairly quickly and your toxins will go away!  Do not feed the tank, do not add any coral or fish or any other livestock durring this period of high toxins while a natural cycle process occurs.  Adding additional saltwater bacteria and enzyme will help greatly expedite the process.  Live Sand like Aragalive is very beneficial if you are not already using it!
  7. The following chemicals are a must have for any reef system, especially for the health and well being of your live rocks coraline and coral growth!

How do I make my live rock super bright purple
with coraline algae now that it's in my tank?

First, Follow our online instructions to the "T" on how to prep your rock (Click Here for a Free Print Out)

Second, you “Must” have a minimum of 5 watts total lighting per gallon of water (ie. A 100 Gallon Tank would require ideally 500w-800w lighting).  50% of this total should range from 5500K too 14K Kelvin Rating.  The other 50% of this total “Must Be” Super Actenic 03 lighting!  Now, with this lighting, simply maintain manufacturer suggested levels for your specific reef or fish tank of four (4) primary chemicals!

·         Iodine

·         Strontium

·         Molybdenum

·         Liquid Calcium (at a 450 reading on your calcium test kit)

That’s it, your set to go and with these few tips, your rock will flourish with purple coralline algae!  Hope this helps and let us know if we can be further help again in the future.

Final Notes to Customers Frequent Questions of natural rock bleaching and red slime problems:

White spots and Red Slime is a very normal occurrence.  The rock typically comes in looking and smelling good.  If you have poor aeration, the rock will begin to smell.  If you have good aeration and I even exaggerate my aeration during a cycle period by putting several air stones under my rock and it will quickly cure up.  This is pre-cured rock so it will cycle quickly if you have a good system full of circulation and aeration especially with the additive “Nitromax”.  (Read our Free Live Rock Article) .  You will often find that your rock will loose some if not all color totally in a cycle process.  A red slime (brown and tan too) will grow all over the rock and sand.  This is Cyanobacteria and is very common in reef tanks but particularly when you first get live rock in the first month.  You want to keep your rock cleaned off of this carpet like slime as it will prevent light from getting to the rock thus preventing photosynthesis on your coralline algae and causing white bleached out spots.

Once your rock is cycled and your toxins of Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate are finally at zero, under the right lighting of 4-7 watts per gallon of water which must include lighting in both the 10,000 Kelvin Rating and Super Actinic 03 Blue lighting while dosing with “Purple-Up”, Calcium, Strontium, Molybium and Iodine, (mini kits are available) your rock will eventually turn a super bright purple which typically starts out in it’s green phase as it morphs.  Under ideal conditions, you can turn even dead rock to this bright purple look in only a week!

Your cycle process may be delayed if you don’t use a good cleaner like “Rock-Prep”.

Also, normal occurrences are to see your water hit a bacterial bloom if you are low on bacteria (Nitromax) and Oxygen which will form a milky or green pea soup type look in your water.  If this happens, add a good air supply and a bottle of Nitromax and your problem should go away within 24 hours.  If your water is green, a U/V sterilizer will clean that up in 30 minutes but you still need to fix the problem of the lack of bacteria or oxygen.

That's kind of you to come back to say so publically and more than happy to help.

It's actually very common even if you over night your live rock. Most hobbyists who have little or no experience with live rock are often misinformed that even when fully cured and in the best of conditions like getting it directly from a collector and importer such as ourselves meaning in ideal conditions, less than 24 hours from the ocean, even the best ultra premium rock still will go through a photosynthesis alteration. First phase is that all color fades or will even disappear all together. This is the part most think the rock is now "dead". It is in fact very much alive. All animal and plant life very much alive whether on micro or macro levels, it simply is only embeded into the rock now and must be now brought back out. Think of this like prunning roses, grape vines or some other sort of annual plant life which is seasonal down to the nubs or even better, pulled out all together. They leave rooting and/or seed bulbs behind in the ground as coraline algae and other life does in the rock. It too comes back to life very quickly provided some simple trace elements and lighting needs it typically gets in nature. In synopsis, Calcium at 450, Strontium, Molybium and Iodine are necessary. Other Vitamin and Trace Elements are benneficial too, but these are crucial for the regrowth process. Then, lighting for your coraline algae at a minimum of 5 watts per gallon water. Half of which should be VHO, T5 or PC Super Actenic 03 Lighting and the other half being a Super Daylight system in the 10-14k Kelvin Range! We often have fish clubs and customers come to our warehouse and are amazed how we can demonstrate on rock that is even beyond dead (not talking of base rock) but rock not normally used like any limestone, granite rock, or just pick one - we can do it and how it morphs so quickly with the growth of coraline algae in early stages of just a few days to what would be known as the highest of ultra premium quality in about 4-6 weeks! Want brighter colors, turn off the daylight lighting but leave your Actenic 03 lighting on overnight (24 hours) at least 3 days a week for "super purple" coraline growth!

Our company is an industry leader and has been specializing in live rock carrying over 134 types for nearly 25 years now! We don't keep this stuff a secret, but rather choose to help educate the community so to improve the hobby. A book is approaching publication soon all on the secrets of live rock keeping from purchase to grow out and we should release it by 2008 but still offer this information free of charge to all.

I hope this information has been helpfull and appreciate your return business. I can only ask you tell a club, forum or friend about us and lead them to take a look at our site.

I just wanted to appologise. I came off on you pretty hard thinking my rock died and thought your rock was bad because I lost all color in less than a week after recieving it. I did ship by UPS Ground to save money as you pointed out against your advise looking back on the ad now advising me to ship overnight. I just wanted to let you know how I felt and that I wanted to appologise because now that I have had the rock in my tank, in only 4 weeks now, all the coraline color is now returning. Looks like it was all still in the rock and never really did die. I sould have just called you in person and given your advise a chance. I'll be making another purchase for another 200 lbs of your Hawaiian Live Base for it's fine structure and 100 lbs of Fiji Ultra Premium for it's color and growth. I will be shipping by Air Cargo for 24 hour shipping this time around and thank you for all your help.
